DECREASE COVID19 IN MIRAMAR

COVID19 RESPONSE BY THE CITY OF MIRAMAR

COMMUNITY HEALTH AT THE TOP

As an Infectious Disease Nurse with many years of bedside experience, Former Commissioner Riggs has insight and assessment skills pertaining to health care and preventative measures that are life saving for our Miramar Community. Due to Miramar’s geographical location, being border line of Dade County, the number of positive Covid-19 cases that Miramar has seen is four times that of our sister cities to our north. In spite of our geographical location to Miami Dade County, there are measures that the government of the City of Miramar can put in place in order to decrease the spread of the virus. Analyzing the breakdown of the spread within all of Miramar, the 33023 Zip Code is most at risk and vulnerable to the spread of Covid-19. The initial focus to decrease the spread should have been within the 33023 Zip Code.

The increases in positive cases within the 33023 Zip Code could be due to several reasons:

1. The majority of small businesses including restaurants are located within the 33023 Zip Code, therefore an initial focus was needed within these areas early in the process. It is never too late to shift focus and educate each business owner of the importance and also provide necessary supplies to those who cannot afford the necessities.

2. The initial and majority of the food drives are within the 33023 Zip Code. The need for many volunteers increases the risk for exposure to the virus. As the need for food provision continues, the idea of directly dropping the food to our residents may be necessary in order to decrease the risk of exposure.

3. In addition to continued education, and provision of necessary equipment and items, receiving input from sister cities who are successful at keeping their numbers low and functioning simultaneously is necessary.

Darline Riggs will provide personal leadership and financial acumen to secure financial security for the city of Miramar to remain fully-staffed throughout any pandemic or natural disaster and to support residents financially.
